Review: Debauchery - F**k Humanity

German “death metal meets gore” band Debauchery just released their newest record, “F**k Humanity”, on the 10th of July, which comes with 12 songs. It’s a band that, since its formation back in 2003, has divided the metal community in fans and haters. Let’s listen to their newest work!

To be honest, I missed their last couple of albums, but to my surprise this record is loaded with rock’n’roll riffs and melodies. This already shows in the instrumental intro piece. The first “real” song, “Ironclad declaration of war”, is certainly the best one of the entire album, if not of the entire band’s history. Why? The aforementioned rock riffs add a nice diversity to the underlying death metal sound. A never-been-there thing for Debauchery, at least as far as I know, is the refrain, in which Gurrath alters between growls and clean singing. Overall great sound and song, this song will be stuck in your ear for some time!

Well, joy doesn’t last long… after two perfectly fine songs with typical Debauchery titles (“Gorezilla”), “German Warmachine” comes up. What a let-down! While the instrumental part is perfectly fine, and is mainly groovy rather than really a death metal piece, the song text of this piece is just tasteless... Starting off with Gurrath growling something about a “super heavy german warmachine”, and closes with the same, but in German. Well, I am not overly sensitive, and surely enough there’s artistic freedom, but this resembles too strongly some Nazi propaganda crap, and thus leaves a rather unpleasant taste. Complete fail in my opinion. The remainder of the album can be summarized quite rapidly: typical Debauchery sound with the occasional rock influence. Definitely not bad, but after some time rather monotonous.

Well, overall “F**k humanity” is, at least in my opinion, a strong improvement over earlier Debauchery works. This mainly is due to strong improvement in the quality of the lyrics (well, with the above mentioned exception…), the technical part of it and the mixing and mastering process. Overall not a bad record, would recommend to listen to it, but it’s certainly not a “must”. 6,5/10.
