Interview: Ethmebb

In January, French metallers Ethmebb released their album called La quete du Saint Grind. DutchMetalManiac's Henric van Essen already reviewed it here. Below you can read the interview DutchMetalManiac's Tim van Velthuysen did with them.

Hey guys, how’s life in France?

It depends on the wind, generally it’s colder than Spain, or Morocco. And we have David Guetta.

Ethmebb, why did you choose that bandname?

Damien’s (drummer) father was playing Diablo 2 back in the days and his character’s name at this moment was something like “Gemeb”. Remi (guitarist, singer) saw this name and said “Oh, that’s a cool name”.

Besides he was listening to a Belgian metal band called “Emeth”, so he mixed Gemeb with Emeth and BOOM! Ethmebb was born.

For people who haven’t heard your music (yet), how would you describe your music?

First of all, do not rely on the term “Grind”. This is not Grindcore at all !

We have one rule : No boundaries in our music.

We can call it “Epic death metal” or “Power death metal” but we have funk, ska, black metal, melodeath, …

The album talks about a knight called Tathor who lost his “Grind” which refers at his sex-appeal. He goes through a quest in order to recover it and have sex again !

You recently released your debut full-length, La quete du Saint Grind, how is it to have it released?

We are very proud of it. Most songs in this record were composed between 2006 and 2012 but our hair were not long enough to handle such epicness.

So we worked for years to get mighty enough to handle this, and here we are ! Born to be kings, we are princes of the universe !

Can you explain the story behind the album cover?

The art is a parody of the painting “Le radeau de la méduse” by the french painter Théodore Géricault.

It represents the protagonists of the tale that we sing in our album “La quête du Saint Grind”.

The artwork is by Nicolas Dubuisson (website)

Your lyrics are partly in French, which is your mother tongue, what made you decide to do it that way?

It’s nearly all in French, because the French growl sounds funny ! And it’s easier to make puns. Besides, we can paraphrase Alexandre Dumas and Booba, two very well-known and talented poets from our country.

And French people have a crappy English accent. We can’t tell correct.

Who/what are your influences, in music and besides music?

We all have different musical influences, and this is what makes our music so rich !

Rémi and Damien like extreme metal, Jacob (lead guitar) listen to progressive rock and metal and François (bass) is more Rock’n Roll, and Rockabilly.

We also like video games music and orchestral music !

Can we expect some shows in support of La quete du Saint Grind?

We had a release party last January in Paris, and we are working on some shows in France for 2017.

Any other future plans for Ethmebb you can tell us already?

Yes, we are working on the next adventure of Tathor. It’s too soon to say more but we want to go further in our musical creativity.

No boundaries !

Thank you for the interview. Is there something you want to say to our readers?

Wardrobe.
