Review: Grave Digger - Exhumation The Early Years

Chris Boltendahl has been the singer of this band for 35 years now and his voice has this too much whiskey and cigarettes sound that some get over time. Sometimes his voice is amazing, at other times not so much, but still this is a great album.

It starts with “Headbanging Man” which has a kickass rhythm that leaves you hopeful for what the rest of the album might bring. The vocals are not that great, but the strength is definitely the amazing guitar and drums. Ritt and Arnold play like maniacs!

“Stand Up And Rock” and “Enola Gay-drop The Bomb” are great vocally but other songs like “Fire In Your Eyes” and previously mentioned “Headbanging Man” are not that strong. Vocally that is, because the rest of the band make all of the above worth listening to anyway.

When I say ‘vocally not that strong I actually mean that it’s this hoarse thing that he does instead of singing. I’m not saying I don’t like it though. It’s more of a whiskey drenched story telling that I happen to enjoy listening to.

Basically all I can say is that if you happen to appreciate previous Grave Digger albums you will definitely like this one!
