Review: Gus G. - Brand New Revolution

Brand New Revolution is the second solo album for guitar master and widely renowned musician Gus G. After releasing last year’s “I Am The Fire” he already finished and released his new solo effort. This already tells me he is a very driven musician and eager to release his creativity.

It is not uncommon for Gus G to work hard since he has many bands and project. The most popular being Firewind (which is asleep) and playing with Ozzy Osbourne’s band.

The first song ‘The Quest’ starts of quickly with big arpeggios and sweeping leads by the wizard himself. He makes it really clear that it is HIS album and his guitar arts are being displayed. With guest appearances like Mats Leven (Therion, Candlemass) and Elize Ryd (Amaranthe). Gus also shows that he has many contacts in the music business. The first mentioned sings the most in the last half of the album. Which I feel is the least strong half of the two. His voice is there but it feels hollow. As if he shouldn’t be there.

On the other hand I was pleasantly surprised by Elize Ryd. I am not a big fan of Amaranthe and their music but her voice fits the music on this album. Even though she only sings on one song, I Feel like ‘What Lies Below’ is the strongest song on the album composition and structure wise. The voice fits and what I really enjoyed in this song was the guitar solo. It shows that Gus G has emotion in his playing and is not all about playing fast.

Looking at the whole album, I might be the only one, but I got a really strong black label society feel on it overall. Mostly on the vocal parts and the riffs in the choruses. Ofcourse you know what is coming at you when you first hear a new Gus G album but he produces great albums with a lot of nice diversity. Gus G really deserves the credits and respect for his efforts because he is working really hard on it.

I would not play this album daily or on a regular basis but it is enjoyable. For the fans of Gus G this record will be stuck in the player for a long time.

Great guitar playing.
Great song writing.
Great choice of guest musicians.

8/10 for Brand New Revolution
